5 Ways to Make the Most out of your Summer!
The benefits of exercise for seniors are endless. Specifically, exercise helps to keep your body regularly active, it is a great way to boost your mood, plus exercise helps to keep your mind sharp. However, the summer months can pose some challenges since the warmer weather can cause dehydration or tiredness.
Finding the right balance to spend time outside while the days are longer can be tricky. It may take some extra care and planning, but it is all worthwhile! So here are 5 ways to make the most of your summer:
#1 Become a Spectator
One of the main health advantages of spending time outside during summer is being able to soak up some Vitamin D. Vitamin D can help improve cognitive function and mood, so not only does being outdoors provide you with natural light and fresh air it also has many emotional and mental benefits.
Attending a school sports day, or a children’s sporting event is a great way to spend time with family and friends outdoors! Small events like these are usually held on school grounds which means there will be plenty of accessible space and covered areas if the heat is overwhelming.
#2 Animal Lover
If you have an interest in nature and wildlife, bird watching is a great outdoor activity! There are lots of collection books available to buy which offer great insight into the different types of birds you can expect to see, at different times of the year, in your local area.
Alternatively, bring the birds to you! A bird house or bird feeder is a great addition to any garden and it means you can enjoy being surrounded by wildlife in your own garden during the summer.
If you are keen to take a walk around your local area, joining a neighbour on a dog walk is also a great way of staying active and topping up your Vitamin D during the summer months. However, be aware that the hottest times of the day are usually between 10 – 4 pm, so when arranging dog walks or bird watching trips plan ahead to make the most out of the cooler hours.

Some local community events may include dance classes, and during the summer an outdoor space is the perfect venue. Dancing is a great way to keep the body moving while also having fun and socialising with family and friends!
Alternatively, if you have an interest in a precision sport, such as golf, the warmer months are a perfect opportunity to try out a something new. Golf is a light physical activity which will help your body and mind stay active, while also opening a whole new world of interests, techniques and social groups.
