Saving the planet and keeping your energy bill down are not mutually exclusive. In fact, the two go hand-in-hand. Heating and cooling your house, especially in areas where the temperature shifts can be more dramatic, can be very expensive. However, there are some easy things you can do around the house to reduce how much you’re spending on your energy bill.

Time your heating
Using a timer for your heating is very useful. By using timers, you can ensure that your heating only comes on at set times – such as in the morning, or towards the end of the evening when it starts to get colder.
Timers can also be useful if you leave your central heating off all day and only put it on in bursts. If you do this, you may find you’re paying less than if you leave it on a low setting for several hours – or use a timer to only put it on during times when you’re actually using it.
Turn down the thermostat at night
The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that you can save about 10 percent each year on your heating bills by turning down your thermostat 10-15 degrees for eight hours. The perfect time to do this is overnight. By investing in things like winter duvets and flannel bedsheets, you won’t even notice that the thermostat has been turned down.
Use LED fairy lights
Christmas is the season for extravagant decorations, but these decorations can come with quite the cost. Therefore, you should be using LED holiday lights – as LEDs use at least 75 percent less energy than regular lightbulbs (and last 25 times longer)
As well as using less energy, LED lights don’t create as much heat and are much more resistant to breaking – making them an all-around safer option to use, especially if the grandkids come to visit. Make sure you always unplug your holiday lights before going to bed or leaving the house too.
Eat warm meals
This might seem like an obvious idea, but eating warm meals is a great way to stay warm in the winter. This is because our bodies gain heat from the energy in our food, but you can warm your body yourself with warm meals – meaning that your body doesn’t have to draw so much heat from the food.
Eat hot, healthy meals throughout the winter, making sure that you include a balance of nutrients to keep away colds and flu, as well as slow-release energy foods, like pasta and potatoes.
Get insulation for free
This might seem like a big undertaking, but it is one that can really help you in the long run. Cavity wall insulation and loft insulation can save a lot of money. On average, cavity wall insulation can save you around 15% on your fuel bills, which works out at around £98 per year, and loft insulation can save around 19% on your fuel bill, which works out at an average of £128 per year.
There are plenty of government-backed full and partial grants available to help you pay for insulation. But bear in mind it’ll only work if you have cavity walls or an appropriate loft space. Even if you don’t get a grant for insulation, it can work out to be very cost effective in the long run.
